What a cowboy, what an elephant!

This book carried an important thread from beginning to end: the Elephant as "Storyteller." Although baby Amy was rescued from a horrible elephant slaughter in Africa, the author got through it quickly, which made it tolerable.

When the rich but humble cowboy enters the story, I wanted to hail him as hero for his ability to be a nonconformist at the most crucial and correct times, and to hail Amy the elephant as heroine - for her ability to overcome. The two were meant for each other, and shared a complementary sense of humor and desire to kindly tease one another, a striking independence, and a faithful love. Neither one wanted to cowtow to others' expectations or rules, yet their refusal was from a sense of "pure goodness." The cowboy was obviously a little over the top with his intelligence and humor, just like his elephant. Their joyous love for each other was evident, especially during the most poignant peaks of emotion, in which Amy showed the cowboy her special way to "share the moment." (You will know when you arrive at that page). The story's value is in its sharing of the joyous discovery of true love between two special beings; then, when that love grows so great, one realizes the ability to let go at the right time is one of the greatest hallmarks of love.
Excellent

Excellent book! One of those you can curl up with on a Sunday and read the whole thing without putting it down.

Enticing Elephant

If you have any doubts about the intelligence, playfulness and creativity of elephants, this book should dispel them. This is a charming book of true love and caring - between an elephant and a human. An enjoying and enlightening read. I guarantee you will be charmed by Amy. If you like this one, you must really read Modoc, another true story, but one which far surpasses all other elephant stories.
A good review does not tell the entire story or the ending!

Spoiler reviews are really a pet peeve of mine. Fortunately I had only read a couple that didn't spoil the book for me before I put it on my wish list. I don't think I would have read it had I knew the story already. Why bother? Amazon should do something labeling reviews that tell the story so it's not interesting to read any longer.
The Cowboy & His elephant is really about five stories in one. What five? I will not spoil it for everyone. All I will say it is a true story about a very interesting, lovely man who is famous for his business and his looks who really loves animals.
so frustrating

I really wanted to like this book but I was so frustrated by the wooden, one-dimensional characters. Amy, the elephant, is an interesting subject; however, slogging through this poorly written story to learn about her just isn't worth it.
