Snakes do it... owls do it... wolves, lions, and tigers do it... heck, even some PLANTS do it! So how come it's so controversial to feed whole prey animals to our domesticated dogs, cats, and ferrets?
As part of PetHobbyist.com's annual Chat Week, DogHobbyist.com, CatHobbyist.com, and ExoticHobbyist.com welcome Dr. Tom Lonsdale as our special guest on Sunday, December 7, at 9 PM Eastern, for a discussion of natural diets for dogs, cats, and ferrets, and related health issues. Dr. Lonsdale is the author of the popular and thought-provoking Raw Meaty Bones Promote Health, in which he explains the health benefits animals will experience when fed a proper diet - a diet that does NOT come in a bag or can!
Tom Lonsdale graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, University of London in 1972. By the mid 1980s, he noticed that pets that had been brought to the veterinary practice as young animals were showing signs of premature aging and chronic ill-health — in particular the pets suffered from foul breath and rotting teeth and gums — directly attributable to a diet of processed food. A little extra thought led Tom to the realization that the veterinary profession was "living a lie." Instead of standing up for pets and their owners the profession had become a marketing arm of the pet food industry.
In 1991 Drs. Breck Muir and Alan Bennet joined Dr. Lonsdale in what became known as the Raw Meaty Bones Lobby. The three vets campaigned for a healthier diet for pets, an end to unnecessary dental procedures and an end to the veterinary profession’s cooperation with the artificial pet food manufacturers — this, they argued, was the better way for the veterinary profession to serve the community.
