Naming Your Hedgehogs.... And Other Small Pets By PHBunRab
Hedgie colors also inspire names. Hedgies come in colors such as apricot, chocolate, and snowflake, so names can include brands of chocolate, words related to snow, or words related to fruit. There's also names that begin with A, to go with apricot: Amelia Apricot, Aloysius Apricot. Consider using a foreign word that means apricot, chocolate, snow, or some other color: Nieve is snow in Spanish; there's Blanca or Blanco for white, Schnee for snow in German... lots of languages to look in. This idea can work for other small animals too, looking for words meaning red, brown, cream, gold, grey, and so on, for animals with fur of those colors. Then there's those hedgies that just love to run. Take a look at the names of Olympic track stars, or famous marathon runners, for those - especially many of the recent marathon winners, who are from Africa - what better names for African hedgehogs?
Then there are names that are plays on spines or quills without being as direct - names having to do with cactus, for instance: Opuntia, Prickly Pear, Ocotillo, Saguaro. How about names of famous dressmakers and tailors who use a lot of pins and needles: fashion designers from Christian Dior to Donna Karan, Armani, or historical ones, such as the tailor Weston, who outfitted King George IV in the 1800s. Or Betsy Ross, famous for her sewing! One of my hedgies is named Schneider, the German word for tailor. Then there's one more popular theme, names beginning with H, so that they sound good with Hedgehog. There's Harriet, Henrietta, Henry, Hank, Hugh, Hugo, Hortense, Holly, Horton, Hepzibah, Hoffnung, Hildegarde, Hoople, Harold, and many more. Whatever you name your hedgehog, be sure to address your pet by name often, especially when you tell it how much you love having it for a companion!
